Editorial summary
Luke and Matthew each tell of Jesus’ birth and early years, recording different episodes. Luke follows the family from Nazareth to Bethlehem and the temple; Matthew tells of the wise men, the flight to Egypt and the settling in Nazareth.
Matthew sets the birth in the days of King Herod (Matthew 2:1). Most scholars place it between 6 and 4 BC; Herod’s death is usually dated to 4 BC, though some argue for 1 BC.
