Editorial summary

The region of Nazareth, Cana and Capernaum, where the Gospels set much of Jesus’ ministry. Herod was its tetrarch, and Matthew says the eleven disciples met the risen Jesus on a mountain in Galilee.

What happened here

3
  1. The Sermon on the Mount

Seeing the crowds, Jesus went up onto the mountain and sat down, and his disciples came to him. He taught them, beginning with a series of blessings. When he had finished, the crowds were astonished, because he taught with authority and not like the scribes.

Matthew says only that Jesus went up onto the mountain while going about Galilee (Matthew 4:23–5:1); afterward he entered Capernaum (8:5). The mountain is not named, and the marker is a representative point for Galilee.

  2. On the mountain in Galilee

The eleven disciples went to the mountain in Galilee where Jesus had sent them. When they saw him they bowed down, though some doubted. Jesus told them to make disciples of all nations, baptizing and teaching them, and said he would be with them always, to the end of the age.

Matthew does not name the mountain (Matthew 28:16). The marker is a representative point for Galilee.

  3. Appointing the Twelve

Jesus went up into the mountain and appointed twelve to be with him and to be sent out to preach: Simon, whom he named Peter; James son of Zebedee and his brother John; Andrew; Philip; Bartholomew; Matthew; Thomas; James son of Alphaeus; Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot; and Judas Iscariot.

Mark says only that Jesus went up into the mountain, after withdrawing to the sea with his disciples (Mark 3:7, 13); Luke also says the mountain (Luke 6:12). Neither names it. Mark’s account is set in Galilee here, so the marker is a representative point for the region.
