What happened here
7The empty tomb
As the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. Matthew tells of an earthquake and an angel who rolled away the stone and told them Jesus had risen. Mark, Luke and John describe the morning differently; in John, Jesus appears to Mary Magdalene.
Matthew does not say where the tomb was. John places it in a garden at the place where Jesus was crucified (John 19:41–42); the marker shows the traditional site.
Jesus meets the women
Leaving the tomb with fear and great joy, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary ran to tell the disciples. Jesus met them on the way; they took hold of his feet and worshiped him, and he told them to tell his brothers to go to Galilee, where they would see him.
Matthew says Jesus met the women after they left the tomb, on their way to the disciples; the place is not named. The marker shows the traditional site of the tomb.
The crucifixion
Jesus was crucified at Golgotha between two others, beneath a written charge naming him King of the Jews. Darkness covered the land from the sixth hour to the ninth, when he cried out with a loud voice and died.
The women report the empty tomb
At dawn the women found the stone rolled away and the body gone, and two men in dazzling clothing told them he had risen. Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James and others told the apostles, who did not believe them. Peter ran to the tomb and saw the linen strips lying by themselves.
Luke does not say where the tomb was or where the apostles were when the women returned to them. John places the tomb in a garden at the place of the crucifixion (John 19:41); the marker shows the traditional site.
Jesus’ mother at the cross
Standing by the cross were Jesus’ mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. Seeing his mother and the disciple whom he loved, Jesus told her that the disciple was her son, and told the disciple that she was his mother; from that hour the disciple took her into his home.
Burial in a new tomb
Joseph of Arimathaea, with Nicodemus, took Jesus’ body, wrapped it in linen with spices and laid it in a new tomb in a garden near the place where he was crucified.
Jesus appears to Mary Magdalene
Mary Magdalene stood weeping outside the tomb and saw two angels where the body had lain. Turning, she saw Jesus but took him for the gardener until he called her by name. He sent her to his brothers, and she told the disciples that she had seen the Lord.
John says the tomb was in a garden at the place where Jesus was crucified (John 19:41–42); the marker shows the traditional site.
